What is a dental emergency?

A true dental emergency is any issue that requires immediate and often same-day dental care. Here at our Foothill Ranch, CA, practice, we offer urgent care to treat any dental emergency that occurs in children and teens. Not sure if your child’s issue is considered a dental emergency? It is an emergency if they are dealing with:

  • A toothache
  • Cracked or broken tooth
  • Dislodged or partially dislodged tooth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Bitten tongue or cheek
  • Broken braces
  • Lost fillings or crowns
  • Infection or abscess

What are the signs of a dental emergency?

Some emergencies are more obvious than others. However, you may want to turn to us right away if your child is dealing with:

  • Dental pain or sensitivity
  • Bleeding
  • Pus
  • Swelling
  • Visible damage to a tooth
  • Broken or damaged braces

If your child is dealing with any of these symptoms, play it safe and give our office a call. We’d be happy to discuss your child’s symptoms over the phone to determine whether they need to come in right away.

How should I handle my child’s dental emergency?

The very first call you should make is to our pediatric dental office in Foothill Ranch, CA, so we can prepare to have your child seen right away when they come into the office. • Apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling
  • Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory to ease pain and discomfort
  • Make sure to collect any chipped or broken pieces of your child’s tooth and bring them into our office
  • If orthodontic wires are broken or loose and could cut your child’s mouth or lip, apply orthodontic wax to the end of the wire and come into our office right away so we can repair or replace the wire
